The Society Turns 30

A number of years ago, in the mid-1970’s, a group of friends gathered in a private house to find out what malt whisky would taste like drawn straight from the cask. The cask in question had been procured from Glenfarclas Distillery. The friends filtered its contents through a muslin cloth into an assortment of old lemonade and whisky bottles. What they discovered surprised and delighted them: it was stronger and had more flavour than the whisky they knew. And the influence of the wood was immediately and abundantly clear. Intrigued, they went on to compare and contrast more single cask whiskies, and the rest is, as they say, history.

In 1983, the friends formed a limited company, bought the premises at The Vaults in Leith and The Scotch Malt Whisky Society was born. In those 30 years the Society has grown from being an eclectic syndicate of friends huddled in a hallway with gallon jam jars to a truly one-of-a-kind global society: The world’s foremost Scotch whisky club. There are 19 active member bases across the entire globe hosting a staggering 26,000 members.

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society at 30 is:
Still curious
Still entertaining
Still one-of-a-kind
The intrigue lives on…
